Arctic Alps is based on a preliminary study which explores a “ski-in/ski-out” concept from the city centre (Rapport om vinterturisme i Troms, Norut). 3The study pinpoints Tromsø as one of two “driving engines” in a future tourism push in the region, and considers the feasibility of establishing a gondola lift running from the city centre to the mainland mountain of Fløya (crossing the Tromsøysundet channel). This vision is based on the presumption that a new alpine ski resort is constructed gradually and that the gondola, meanwhile and thereafter, accommodates natural wildlife exploration. Arctic Alps becomes an impressive landmark and a considerable addition to Tromsø’s tourist attractions. All- year operation leads to increased social utility for the local population and commercial operators. The project was presented at the Ny Giv Tourism Conference (22 November 2006).
